I had a pleasant surprise this weekend whilst exploring some of the features of my American Express Platinum Card…
I’ve had the American Express Platinum Card for a few months now, and I’m still working my way through its various benefits and features. You do get a lot for your £450 fee – I recently explained how it has already effectively paid for itself – though I fully appreciate that many people aren’t prepared to spend that high a fee for such a product. Nevertheless, for those who have the card, or are considering it, I think it’s worth sharing this extra perk I didn’t know about…
One such Platinum benefit I’ve recently taken advantage of is the ability to nominate someone for a free Supplementary Platinum card. Whoever you nominate as your supplementary cardmember will also get all the benefits of the Platinum Card. This includes:
- Comprehensive travel insurance (including car hire insurance)
- Elite status with most of the major hotel chains (including Hilton, Starwood, Marriott, Club Carlson, Melia and Shangri-la)
- Priority Pass membership (allowing the member plus one guest unlimited entries to hundreds of airport lounges)
- And tonnes more
So if you have the Platinum card, you could nominate your partner and essentially share the benefits (and split the annual fee, if you like…)
On Friday I added my free supplementary cardmember by filling out an online form whilst logged into my Platinum account on the Amex website. The following day I happened to review my Membership Rewards balance in the Amex app. I was pleasantly surprised to see an unexpected 5,000 Membership Rewards bonus!
These 5,000 points are worth at least £25 of shopping vouchers. If you want to make those points even more rewarding, you should consider redeeming them for airline miles such as Avios (at a rate of 1:1). In my recent post on how to book flights using Avios, I gave an example of how can easily get almost 2p worth of value per Avios. This would make the 5,000 bonus points worth almost £100.
I’d heard reports online of other Platinum card holders who had received a similar Membership Rewards bonus offer on their account or via email – but these people had been targeted for that particular offer. In my case, despite not being targeted to receive the bonus points for adding a supplementary cardmember, I got them anyway!
If you have a Platinum card (or indeed any card issued by Amex), it’s worth checking your online account and emails to see if you’ve been targeted for any supplementary cardmember bonuses. Even if you haven’t, there’s no harm in calling American Express to see if they’ll offer any bonus points offers for adding a supplementary card.
